I read that there's a better way to calculate dog years than multiplying by 7. Puppies become adults physically in about 1 year. So the firstyear of being a dog equates to being about 21 for a human. But after that a human's lifespan is about 4 times longer, so every 4 years after that for a dog equals about 1 human year. So
human years = 21 + (dog years - 1)*4
It's quicker to multiply the dog's age by 4 and add 17, which comes to the same thing.

1. Dogs do not have problems expressing affection in public.
